Windshield Removal • Pre-inspect vehicle with customer or with pre-inspection worksheet. Note all damage to exterior, interior and mechani- cal devices pertaining to windshield replacement. See The Seven Steps of Installation (free download from NGA), step one, for further information. • Double check for correct glass parts, moldings and miscellaneous supplies. • Put on all personal protection equipment to reduce injury. • Protect the vehicle interior and exteri- or surfaces from possible damage. See The Seven Steps of Installation (free download from NGA), step two, for further information. • As parts are removed from the vehicle, place them where they will not be damaged or misplaced. • Remove the mirror by loosening the Phillips setscrew at the mirror base. • Remove spring-action wipers with a wiper-removal tool; later models have a clip release. Unplug washer hoses. • Remove the locking Mylar insert from the gasket; some are rubber. • Remove glass by applying pressure from inside the vehicle outward starting in the upper corner. This may be tight. • Attach vacuum cups to the outside surface of the glass after wiping the surface clean.
Installation
It is necessary to use an adhesive system. Do not mix products. This can include, but is not limited to, preps, primers, cleaners and adhesives. Follow all installation procedures recommended by the vehicle or adhesive manufacturer. • Apply metal primer to any exposed paint and scratches caused by the removal process. Allow primers to dry thoroughly according to adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations. • Clean the glass with a lint-free disposable cloth. • Apply any or all preps and primers to the bonding surface of the glass. Allow primers to dry thoroughly. • Attach vacuum cups to the outside surface of the glass. • Set the glass and lip it into the gasket by use of a plastic stick. This can be a very tight fit. Lubricate the gasket with water or glass cleaner. Tap the glass into place once the gasket is on the edge of the glass. Make sure you work in one direction only. Do not get the corners in first. This can cause a stress fracture. Do not apply too much pressure. • Apply a urethane seal between the glass and gasket and between the gasket and the body. • Lubricate the insert channel with water or glass cleaner. Then position the Mylar insert and pound it in with a rubber mallet. The other possibility is the use of an insert tool. • Check for leaks with leak detector or water. • Re-install all other parts in reverse order. • Clean and detail vehicle. • Post-inspect the vehicle. See The Seven Steps of Installation (free download from NGA), step seven, for further information. • It is recommended that the installation be upgraded to a urethane-sealed installation.
